Durham in Southern Living contest for ‘Tastiest Town in the South’
Durham is in the running for “Tastiest Town in the South” in Southern Living magazine. Online voting began Thursday to choose the Bull City over nine other Southern locales, including Asheville. Durham and the other tasty towns will be included in the February issue of Southern Living. The winner will be announced in the May issue.
Other cities in the 10 choices are Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Charleston, S.C.; Greenville, S.C.; Louisville, Ky.; Memphis; Miami and New Orleans. Voting is also part of a sweepstakes. Each daily vote enters the voter into a sweepstakes for a $1,500 trip to the Tasty Town of his or her choice.
Southern Living’s description of why Durham was chosen for the list mentions Shane Ingram and his Four Square restaurant, Counter Culture Coffee, Scratch Bakery and Watts Grocery. The magazine calls Durham the “South’s Best Buzz” and mentions “bootstrap cooks.”
Some cities on the list already have a culinary reputation, like New Orleans and Charleston. For the other cities, Asheville is noted for being a “Brewtopia” with “brilliant bar food.” And Greenville, S.C., is called “the pretty little town with international flair.”
Criteria for “Tastiest Town” include food as cultural identity, growth of a culinary-minded mentality, diverse cuisine at a variety of price points, local and sustainable food practices, hot chefs on the rise, and an abundance of buzz-worthy food events.
In the announcement, Southern Living editor-in-chief Lindsay Bierman said that “Southern cooking has become one of the country’s hottest culinary obsessions. But there’s a lot more to it than pork belly and grits,” Bierman said. “Every day, we’re discovering hyperlocal microcosms of food culture across our region. From beloved food meccas like Charleston and New Orleans to emerging food scenes like Asheville and Greenville, today’s Southern table is laden with distinct flavors and rich stories to tell.”
Voting lasts until Feb. 28 on southernliving.com/tasty or via smartphone by downloading the free Digimarc Discover app and scanning the image in the magazine. You can vote once a day, each vote entering you in the running for the $1,500 trip.
