Birkhead holds second in sheriff campaign fundraising
Clarence Birkhead’s campaign finance report arrived by mail at the Durham Board of Elections on Friday.
According to the filing, the former Duke University police chief and one-time candidate for Orange County sheriff took in just over $7,900 this election cycle.
That puts him ahead of Durham County Sheriff’s Office retiree Richard Buchanan but far behind incumbent Sheriff Mike Andrews, who has raised more than $27,000 toward Tuesday’s primary election.
His listed contributors include Omar Beasley, who ran unsuccessfully for Durham County Commissioner in 2013, and the New South Leadership PAC. The Democratic political action committee, for which U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield serves as treasurer, gave $500 to Birkhead’s campaign.
