Pressure mounts for Tar Heels
Freshman Trent Thornton will try to keep North Carolina’s season alive today at the College World Series.
The Tar Heels, the No. 1 overall seed, will play an elimination game against No. 4 LSU at TD Ameritrade Park (3 p.m., ESPN). UNC is turning to Thornton, who hasn’t started since March but has been the Tar Heels’ most effective pitcher in relief during the postseason.
UNC lost its opening game 8-1 to rival N.C. State and ace Carlos Rodon, who pitched a complete game. The Wolfpack will play UCLA in a winner’s bracket game (8 p.m., ESPN2).
Both local schools are seeking their first NCAA baseball title. UNC is appearing in the CWS for the sixth time in eight years and the 10th time overall. N.C. State is making its second trip to Omaha, and its first since 1968.
