Battle for New Orleans: Devils vs. Irish
Nine years ago at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, seventh-seeded Minnesota upset top-seeded Duke to end the storied career of All-American Alana Beard.
The Blue Devils have a chance to flip the scenario tonight when they face No. 1 seeded Notre Dame and Irish career scoring leader Skylar Diggins in the Norfolk Regional final (7 p.m., ESPN).
Duke is the No. 2 seed but has played three close games to advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Notre Dame, meanwhile, won its games by and average of 26.7 points, including a 93-63 victory in Sunday’s semifinal against Kansas.
The winner earns a trip to the Final Four in New Orleans, which is where the Blue Devils would have gone for the national semifinals in 2004 if not for their loss to the Gophers.
