1 cyclist dead, another injured in hit and run
A man died and a woman was critically injured Thursday night after they were struck by a vehicle while riding their bicycles on U.S. 15-501 south of Southern Village.
Ivin Levander Scurlock, 41, died at the scene. Alexandria Nicole Simou, 40, was transported to UNC Hospitals and was being treated in the intensive care unit, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. Both were from Carrboro.
The pair rode south on U.S. 15-501 about 11:35 when they were struck from behind by an unknown vehicle near Wave Road. The suspect vehicle left the scene.
Scurlock and Simou were thrown from their bicycles, and a Pittsboro police officer who was driving south from Chapel Hill toward Pittsboro found them in the road.
The suspect vehicle likely has front end and windshield damage, but investigators do not know the make or model of the vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol.
“They have assigned an accident reconstructionist to the accident,” said First Sgt. L.T. McPhail.
The accident reconstructionist was at the scene Friday afternoon looking at the bicycles and for other evidence that might help in determining exactly what happened, he said.
“They do their own investigation apart from the primary investigation,” McPhail said.
On Friday morning, the N.C. Highway Patrol asked anyone with information about the accident, the driver or the vehicle to contact the Highway Patrol with that information, but no one had called by 1:40 p.m., McPhail said.
Anyone who has any information about the driver or the vehicle should call the Highway Patrol office in Hillsborough at 919-732-2551 or the Highway Patrol Communication Center in Raleigh at 919-733-3861.
