Fire breaks out at Duke building

Firefighters fought a fire Monday afternoon at Duke University. No one was hurt.

At 3:33 p.m., city firefighters were called to a structure fire at the Duke Engineering Building at 2 Telecom Drive. A small fire on the roof was quickly extinguished.  Damage was limited to a 10 x 12-square-foot area of the roof membrane.  Firefighters assisted Duke officials with removal of a small amount of smoke in the building. 

The fire was caused by a heat gun being used for work on the roof, Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi said. The fire’s cause is under investigation. Firefighters were at the scene of a fire at Duke University this afternoon.

At 3:33 p.m., the Durham Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 2 Telecom Drive, Duke Engineering Building.  On arrival firefighters reported smoke from the top of a commercial building.  A small fire on the roof was quickly extinguished.  Damage was limited to a 10 x 12-square-foot area of the roof membrane.  Firefighters assisted Duke officials with removal of a small amount of smoke in the building. 

The fire was caused by a heat gun being used for work on the roof, Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi said. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
