Durham brothers killed in head-on collision

DURHAM -- Brothers Jorge and Andreas Avalar, both of Durham, died early Friday when a Dodge truck driven by Robert Breeden III of Raleigh drifted left of center on N.C. 98 and struck their Isuzu head-on, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

The accident happened about 5:50 a.m. Initially, alcohol was suspected in the collision. However, Sgt. Jeff Gordon of the Highway Patrol later announced that it was “an impairing substance other than alcohol.” It wasn’t clear, however, what the substance might have been, he said.

Breeden was charged with DWI and two counts of felony death by motor vehicle.
