Apartment fire displaces adults, children
DURHAM - Two adults and three children escaped a fire Thursday afternoon that started in their southeastern Durham apartment, firefighters said.
No one was hurt.
Smoke was pouring out of Apartment 7 at 3019 E. Weaver St. when firefighters arrived at 4:34 p.m., Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi of the Durham Fire Department said.
Iannuzzi said the fire was extinguished quickly and confined to the living room, although there was heat and smoke damage throughout the apartment.
Firefighters evacuated neighboring apartments at the public housing community, but all those residents eventually were able to return to their homes.
The Red Cross was called to help with housing for the displaced occupants.
Twenty-three firefighters were at the scene for more than two hours.
Iannuzzi said the fire's cause is being investigated.
