Two adults and three children escaped a fire Thursday afternoon that started in their southeastern Durham apartment, firefighters said.

No one was hurt.

Smoke poured out of Apartment 7 at 3019 E. Weaver St. when firefighters arrived at 4:34 p.m., said Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi of the Durham Fire Department.

Iannuzzi said the fire was extinguished quickly and confined to the living room, although  heat and smoke damaged the apartment.

Firefighters evacuated neighboring apartments at the public housing community, but all those residents eventually were able to return to their homes.

The Red Cross was called to help with housing for the displaced occupants.

Twenty-three firefighters were at the scene for more than two hours.

Iannuzzi said the fire's cause is being investigated.
