Amtrak train strikes second pedestrian in two weeks
A woman apparently killed herself by stepping in front of an Amtrak train Tuesday morning.
The incident came just eight days after Joseph Mewborn, 20, was struck and killed by the Piedmont on its daily route between Raleigh and Charlotte.
Mewborn died in the 1500 block of East Pettigrew Street near Plum Street while walking with a friend along the tracks about lunchtime.
On Tuesday at 7:10 a.m., Amtrak officials confirmed, the train carrying 33 passengers struck the unidentified woman in the 1000 block of Wrenn Road near Angier Avenue in East Durham.
The train was delayed for about two hours.
Maj. Paul Martin of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide further information about the incident.
“We do not talk about apparent suicides,” he said.
