Cops pursue, arrest man after car theft
DURHAM – An 18-year-old Durham man was arrested early Tuesday after police say he led them on a chase after abandoning a stolen car.
The trouble started about 4 a.m. on Frenchmans Creek Drive, when a woman called police to report that a car had been stolen. She heard the car start and saw it roll out of her driveway, striking a retaining wall next to the driveway as it left. Police said a second vehicle in the drive had been entered and rummaged through.
A short while later, N.C. Central University police officers got behind the stolen car on Linwood Avenue and tried to stop it. The driver kept going, but wrecked the car near Linwood and Spaulding Street. He jumped out of the car and ran, police said.
Durham Police K-9 officers and their dogs tracked the suspect – Keith Demetrius Wright of Seagrove Court – to a patch of bamboo behind a house on Spaulding.
Wright was charged by Durham police with larceny of a motor vehicle, hit and run, breaking and entering to a motor vehicle and driving without a license. The university police department charged Wright with fleeing to elude with a motor vehicle. He was held in the Durham County Jail under $6,000 bond.
