Southwest principal tapped for district post
John R. McCain, principal of Southwest Elementary School, has been named area superintendent for elementary schools by the Durham Public Schools Board of Education.
McCain has led Southwest since 2011.
He starts his new job Feb. 10.
McCain began his career as an elementary teacher in Mebane and later was recognized as Person County’s Wachovia Principal of the Year at Southern Middle School in Roxboro.
“Mr. McCain has built strong relationships within his school community and among his fellow principals,” said DPS Interim Superintendent Hugh Osteen. “He’s a collaborative leader with a solid instructional background who will serve our students and schools well.”
McCain will replace Stacey Wilson-Norman, who was promoted to deputy superintendent for academic services in September.
Veteran educator Emmett Tilley has served as interim area superintendent of elementary schools.
McCain holds a master’s degree in supervision and administration from N.C. A&T State University, and is working toward his doctorate in educational leadership at High Point University.
He will earn $110,000 a year in his new post.
