Durham police investigate shooting

Police Friday evening were investigating a reported shooting that occurred around 6 p.m.  

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of 1418 Avondale Dr., police said. When officers arrived, they found a 33-year-old man inside a barber shop, with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Policed said that witnesses reported that at least two suspects were shooting at each other in the parking lot.  During the exchange of gunfire, five unoccupied vehicles and three occupied businesses were struck by stray rounds. 

According to police, the businesses were Cricket, with six people inside; China King, with five people inside  and Rainbow Tobacco World, with oneperson inside. 

One suspect, Freddy Cheek, 33, was taken into custody after witnesses reported seeing a suspeced shooters run into The Laundry Mat in the same strip mall where the shooting occurred.

 Cheek was armed and, police said, “admitted to being shot at and retuning fire.”

No further information was available late Friday.
