Police log: Arrest sparks internal investigation
In May, Durham police officers arrested Ryan Barnes, 23, on 74 felony charges and 18 misdemeanors across Durham and Wake counties.
Barnes was arrested on May 23 on multiple charges, including assault on a law enforcement officer.
Kammie Michael, spokesperson for the Durham Police Department, said because of the assault, arresting officers were prompted to use force. That also prompted an administration investigation, which is procedure in cases involving police force.
“When doing any administrative investigation, the department looks at all circumstances surrounding the incident to determine if any violations of department policies and procedures occurred,” Michael said in an email to The Herald-Sun
Barnes was also wanted for a probation violation in Virginia.
Barnes was held at the Durham County Jail until June 3 under a $435,000 bond. Since then, his defense attorney said he has been moved to the Wake County Detention Center.
Sixty-seven of the felony charges and 16 misdemeanor charges involved Durham cases. Among the charges were larceny, injury to personal property and breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
