Fire damages condemned house
Fire heavily damaged a condemned, cinderblock house Tuesday on Fayetteville Street. No one was hurt.
Firefighters were called at 5:24 p.m. to the single-story house at 2703 Fayetteville St. and saw heavy smoke, Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi of the Durham Fire Department said.
Flames became visible from a bedroom window soon after arrival, and fire was also found in the attic, he said.
Iannuzzi said firefighters were told when they arrived that two people lived in the house, but no one knew if they were home.
Firefighters searched inside and didn't find anyone, and the fire was declared under control in 12 minutes, he said.
There was heavy fire damage to several rooms and the attic. The fire's cause is being investigated.
Iannuzzi said the house's owner was contacted and said the building was condemned and no one was supposed to be living in it.
Twenty-two firefighters responded to the call, and crews were at the scene about two hours.
