More than half of Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation customers who lost power have it restored.

About 59 percent of the more than 21,000 customers who lost power after Thursday’s sleet and freezing rain are no longer in the dark as crews repair downed and damaged power lines.

Piedmont EMC serves Durham, Orange and Alamance counties. By mid-afternoon Sunday, more than 12,400 customers had their power restored while more than 1,400 in Durham County wre still waiting.

According to Piedmont EMC, more than 220 additional workers are assisting with the around-the-clock restoration efforts. Other co-ops have come to help Piedmont.

Piedmont asks people to stay away from downed lines. They advise having a licensed electrician help connect generators to home wiring to prevent power from the generator flowing back into power lines ,creating a potential hazard for the work crews and the public.

Those with access to power can track the outages on the Piedmont EMC website at www.pemc.coop.
