Drive containing some patients’ info stolen at Duke
Duke University Health System issued a release Friday about theft of a thumb drive that contained some patient information.
The patients affected will be contacted by Duke. The unencrypted drive was taken July 1 from an administrative office. It contained patient information, including names, medical record numbers, physicians’ names, and in some instances the names of the Duke University Health System locations visited.
Duke learned of the theft on that day.
The thumb drive did not include patients’ Social Security numbers, clinical or financial information, or medical records. According to Duke, the incident affected only certain patients treated in the Duke Children’s Health Center and Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital between December 2013 and June 2014.
Duke contacted law enforcement, which has conducted an investigation. No information about rests or resolution of the investigation has been released.
