Bulls lose first game to Pawtucket
Brock Holt’s two-run single in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday night erased a 1-0 Durham Bulls lead and led the visiting Pawtucket Red Sox to a 2-1 win in the opener of the best-of-five Governors’ Cup final.
The Bulls had a chance to tie it or win it in the bottom of the ninth when they loaded the bases with one out, but Pawtucket’s Anthony Carter retired Shelly Duncan and Brandon Guyer to end it.
Pitching dominated the first seven innings of the game. Bulls righthander Jake Odorizzi was brilliant in his seven-inning stint, shutting out the PawSox on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
The PawSox broke through against reliever Jeff Beliveau for both their runs.
Mike Fontenot doubled leading off the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Flores to give the Bulls a lead they held until the eighth.
Game 2 is at 7:05 tonight at Durham Bulls Athletic Park where Bulls righthander J.D. Martin will face Pawtucket righthander Steven Wright. Both pitchers are 1-0 in the playoffs.
