It’s been about a year since Memphis-based EdR broke ground on its housing community at 605 W. Chapel Hill St.

But Thursday, the $46.14-million development celebrated its grand opening with food trucks, a ribbon cutting, and tours.

With 342 available units, the complex is approximately 40 percent full, said Community Manager Cynthia Whyte.

Apartments, offered as studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, range from 400 to nearly 1,100 square feet.

605 West is one of several developments EdR is opening this fall, with others at locations such as the University of Connecticut and the University of Kentucky.

Not every EDR development is the same, said Susan Jennings, EDR’s vice president of corporate communications and marketing.

“We build specifically for that marketplace and university’s needs,” Jennings said.

Some amenities catering to Duke students and Durham include a heated saltwater pool, a 24-hour coffee bar and study rooms with whiteboards, high-speed wi-fi, personalized exercise equipment, a yoga studio and a bike storage facility, Whyte and Jennings said.

The apartments also come fully furnished if the tenant chooses, they said.

Tenants began moving into 605 West on July 15. And while it’s oriented towards younger tenants, Jennings said they also have several older and retired tenants who enjoy the amenities and proximity to downtown Durham.

Michael Priddy, former superintendent of Pitt County Schools and senior consultant of the New Hope Technology Foundation, moved into the complex with his wife on August 1.

She attends Duke Divinity School and Priddy said they decided to relocate from Pitt County so she can be closer to campus.

“We fit part of the demographic in that she’s a graduate student at Duke,” Priddy said. “We just fell in love with the location and the layouts and the amenities that they had built into the complex.”

EdR CEO Randy Churchey attended the opening.

He said the company owns about 50 developments overall, manages 30 for other owners, and will open 12 this year, along with 605 West.
