Body found in convenience store vent ID'd
The last time anyone reported seeing Kenneth Avery Smith alive was about 5 p.m. on Sept. 3 on Dunn Avenue.
He remained lost until Oct. 16, apparently, when insurance adjusters found his body in a vent atop the roof of a Durham convenience store.
On Monday, Durham police confirmed that Smith, 48, was found above the defunct Town ‘N’ Country store across the street from Hillside High School.
The store, which had been decried by school officials as a magnet for delinquency, closed last year and has yet to reopen.
Investigators found no indications of foul play, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
Smith had been listed as an absconder in the N.C. Department of Corrections offender records. His short criminal history included drug possession and misdemeanor breaking and entering in Durham and New Hanover counties.
This May, he was sentenced to probation and community service after his conviction in Durham on misdemeanor drug charges.
