Fire hits tombstone business
Fire damaged a tombstone business Tuesday afternoon in southern Durham, officials said.
Durham city firefighters were called at 4:30 p.m. to J&P Memorials at 4309 N.C. 55 and saw heavy flames in the back of the building, said Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi of the Durham Fire Department.
An attached storage area was destroyed and the rest of the building, mainly in the rear, was significantly damaged, he said.
Iannuzzi said the building was unoccupied when the fire broke out.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 10 minutes.
Two lanes of traffic on northbound N.C. 55 were diverted to the median, slowing movement in the area, he said.
The fire’s cause is being investigated.
