Second bicyclist dies from hit-and-run accident
Alexandria Nicole Simou, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while she and a friend were riding bicycles last Thursday night, died Sunday at UNC Hospitals from her injuries.
Simou, 40, and Ivin Levander Scurlock, 41, were riding bicycles south on U.S. 15-501 near Southern Village about 11:40 p.m., when a vehicle hit them from behind. Both riders were thrown from their bicycles, and a Pittsboro police officer found them in the road.
Scurlock died at the scene of the accident, and Simou was transported to UNC Hospitals, where she was initially listed as being in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle drove away from the scene of the accident. The suspect vehicle would likely have front end and windshield damage, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The N.C. Highway Patrol has received some tips from people who have called with information about possible suspect vehicles, and they are investigating them.
