Pedestrian struck, killed by Amtrak train
A daily commuter train from Charlotte to Raleigh struck and killed a pedestrian Monday while passing through Durham.
Amtrak Train 75, struck the man, whose name and age were withheld pending notification of next of kin, near the intersection of Pettigrew and Plum streets about 12:20 p.m.
The train carried 92 passengers, said Kimberly Woods of Amtrak’s media relations department. No passengers or crew were hurt. The train was delayed about three hours and 21 minutes by the accident, Woods said.
It’s not clear why the man was on the tracks, how fast the train was going when it struck him or whether the engineer had time to apply brakes.
The Durham Police Department was handling notification of next of kin, Woods said.
“Amtrak is cooperating with the investigation into this incident,” she said.
