Police: Foul play unlikely in UNC student’s death
Chapel Hill police investigators don’t think foul play was involved in the death of UNC student Harris Pharr.
Pharr, a member of the Chi Phi fraternity and a graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh, died Thursday night.
Lt. Josh Mecimore of the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed Monday that foul play wasn’t suspected. He said further information isn’t expected “for some time.”
“We are awaiting the medical examiner’s report,” he said.
Pharr’s death comes less than two years after David Shannon, a Chi Phi pledge, died in a fall after climbing a tower at the Ready Mix Concrete Plant in Carrboro.
In November 2013, the fraternity was suspended for alleged violations involving alcohol and inappropriate activities for new members.
Capt. Chris Atack of the Carrboro Police Department said that, for now, the Shannon case is classified as inactive.
“We would further investigate this case if additional information was developed,” he said.
