UNC headed to Gainesville for NCAA Tournament
North Carolina’s streak of appearances in the NCAA baseball tournament will continue – barely.
The Tar Heels (34-25) were one of the last four teams selected into the 64-team field, which was announced Monday.
UNC, the No. 3 regional seed, will face No. 2 Long Beach State (32-24) Friday at 1 p.m. in the Gainesville Regional. Host Florida, the No. 2 overall seed, and CAA champion College of Charleston are also in the regional.
This will be the 13th straight year that UNC plays in the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels have advanced to the College World Series in six of the last eight seasons, but in order to make it back, they will have to start on the road in regional play for the first time since 2010.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional will play the winner of the Coral Gables Regional – which includes Miami, Texas Tech, Columbia and Bethune Cookman – for a spot in the College World Series.
UNC lost 2 of 3 games at College of Charleston (41-17) in the first weekend of the season, Feb. 15-17. It did not play Florida (40-21) or Long Beach St. (32-24)
N.C. State and Duke were not selected for the field, which includes seven teams from the ACC.
