Mother in accidental shooting arrested
The mother of a 9-year-old boy that died in April while playing with a gun has been arrested.
Amy Suzanne Pittman, 36, of Durham was arrested on Rock Street this morning, according to the Durham Police Department.
This comes after a Durham County grand jury issued indictments yesterday charging her in the accidental death of her 9-year-old son.
Officers responded to a shooting call at 412 Macon St. about 9:41 p.m. April 28.
There they found Christian Pittman dead due to a gunshot wound. His mother was questioned. Tapes of the 911 call said the young boy was playing with the gun when it went off.
“He shot himself, but he didn’t know it was loaded,” the caller said in the tapes.
Investigators deemed his death an accidental shooting.
Amy Pittman was not at home at the time, but three children were in the house when the shooting occurred.
At the time of the investigation it was unclear why the gun was left loaded and unlocked.
Christian Pittman was a student at Glenn Elementary School at the time of his death.
The grand jury indicted Pittman on Tuesday on one count of voluntary manslaughter, three counts of felony child abuse -- gross negligence, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of failure to store firearms to protect minors.
No arrest or bond information is available at this time.
