'Wicked' flying back to DPAC for third time
“Wicked,” the blockbuster Broadway musical, is coming back to the Durham Performing Arts Center for a third time. DPAC announced Monday that the production that sold out in 2010 and 2012 will return Jan. 7-25. Tickets go on sale Wednesday for groups of 15 or more, and season seat members can buy tickets starting May 19. Individual tickets go on sale Oct. 4.
“Wicked” is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel of the same name, which is itself an adaptation of Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz.” In “Wicked,” audiences meet a very different Wicked Witch of the West, rather a nice and studious – if green – college student named Elphaba. Her roommate is the bubbly Glinda. Elphaba and Glinda were originally played by stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. Music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, and the book is by Winnie Holzman. Joe Mantello directs. “Wicked” has received a Grammy and three Tony awards.
