The Durham Police department has identified Cayetano Castro-Merino, 21, as the man in the police-involved shooting that took place early Wednesday morning.
He is still in critical condition for his injuries. He was shot in the head by Officer Brian Johnson after not dropping his gun. Johnson had been with the department since November 2003.
Initial 911 calls said a man at the Burton Apartments was shooting a gun. When police arrived they found Castro-Merino with a “long-gun.” Commands to drop the weapon were given in both Spanish and English.
The shooting is still under investigation.
