Durham police investigating Saturday homicide
A 34-year-old man died Saturday morning after he was shot driving his SUV near North Duke Street and Horton Road.
Authorities are investigating the events that led to the death of Haywood Jabbar Downey of Durham.
Investigators believe numerous shots were fired at Downey’s SUV before it collided with a Toyota sedan traveling westbound on Horton Road.
Police said impact of the collision knocked the Toyota into a power pole, causing the pole to break. The SUV went into a yard and struck a tree.
Downey was pronounced dead at the scene. He suffered at least one gunshot wound. The driver of the Toyota was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Charges have not bee filed.
Horton Road between North Duke Street and Newby Drive was closed Saturday morning and afternoon as crews repaired the power pole.
