Live power lines fall across school bus, but no one hurt
A power pole and live power lines fell across a Durham school bus Tuesday afternoon while students were onboard, but no one was hurt, authorities said.
The accident was reported at 3:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Lakeland Street near Mathison Street, Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said. She said the bus driver was trying to turn around when the bus snagged a wire, which caused the pole and wires to fall.
Power to the lines was turned off and all children on the bus got off safely, Michael said.
Sierra Jackson, spokeswoman for the Durham Fire Department, said the bus carried about 17 children. She said firefighters were called to the scene, and that Duke Energy workers were also there.
The bus, No. 126, was carrying students from Burton and Harris elementary schools, according to William Sudderth, director of public information for Durham Public Schools.
Sudderth said all students took a backup bus home or awaited pickup by their parents at Burton Elementary School.
