Teen indicted on robbery charges in carjacking case
A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Justino Navarette Maya, 16, of LaSalle Street in Durham, on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.
The indictment was filed in connection with the Dec. 28 carjacking of Johnny Danilo Villatoro’s silver GMC Envoy. It states that Maya conspired with two juvenile girls to use a handgun to steal the vehicle, worth $2,500.
The trio had asked Villatoro for a ride and shot him and left him for dead on the side of the road once he had taken them to Firth Street, police said. Villatoro, 35, of South Woodcrest Street, died in the incident, which happened shortly before 7 p.m., police said.
One suspect, a 12-year-old girl from Raleigh, accidentally shot herself in the stomach and leg while in the car, police reported.
Maya, a 14-year-old girl, and the 12-year-old girl were charged with murder.
