Police arrest burglary suspect
A Chapel Hill man was arrested early Thursday after he allegedly tried to break into the Social Security Administration building at 3004 Tower Boulevard.
Officers responded to an alarm call at the building around 1 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they heard loud banging sounds and saw a man moving around on the roof of the building. Officers repeatedly challenged the suspect and the suspect refused to comply. The suspect’s actions led officers to believe he was posing a potential imminent deadly threat; therefore, shots were fired at the suspect. The suspect was not wounded by gunfire.
The man then attempted to flee by jumping off the roof. He was taken into custody a short time later.
The man – identified as Brendan Phillip Cannell, 25, of Chapel Hill – was taken to the hospital for treatment of an arm injury suffered when he jumped from the roof.
Cannell is currently on federal probation for a break-in to a DMV office in Carrboro in 2008. He will also be facing several charges in connection with this morning’s incident when he is released from the hospital.
The incident is being investigated by the Durham Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Professional Standards Division, which is standard procedure in any use of force incident.
