Police charge man in scooter driver’s death

DURHAM – Police charged a man Thursday in the death of a scooter driver following a crash Wednesday on University Drive near Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.

James Byrd of Alpine Road in Durham was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield right of way.

The accident happened about 1:55 p.m. when Joshua Johnson, 33, of Durham, was driving a scooter south on University Drive and collided with the side of a northbound 1996 Dodge driven by Byrd.

Police said Byrd tried to make a left turn onto Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard and turned in front of the scooter.

Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Byrd was not hurt.

Man on probation sought in robbery attempt

DURHAM – Police are trying to locate James Odis Sowell Jr., who is wanted in connection with an attempted armed robbery Sunday in the parking lot of Kroger on North Pointe Drive.

A shopper told officers he was putting his groceries in his vehicle around 1:30 a.m. when a man approached him, stuck an unknown object in his side and demanded money. When the victim grabbed a rake from the bed of his truck and started to call 911, the suspect fled without taking anything.

Sowell, 49, of Durham has been charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

According to the N.C. Department of Correction, Sowell was convicted in Durham on March 19 this year for robbery with a dangerous weapon, and received a suspended sentence and 24 months of supervised probation.

Teen charged with assault

DURHAM – Keithen Ralph Bennett, 17, of Lutz Lane, was arrested Monday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was in the Durham County Jail Thursday under a $5,000 bond.

In other crime:

- Deshawn Worthy, 16, of Junction Road, was arrested Monday and charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana. Worthy was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

- Zakwon Ledwell, 17, of Massey Avenue, was arrested Monday and charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and injury to real property. Ledwell was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $3,000 bond.

- Branden Michael Miller, 28, of Burch Avenue, was arrested Monday and charged with breaking into a vehicle. He was in the Durham County Jail Thursday under a $1,500 bond.

- Umeki Myoshi Richardson, 34, of the Scotland County town of Wagram, was arrested Monday by Durham police and charged with felony larceny, conspiracy to commit felony larceny and resisting a public officer. Richardson was released Monday from the Durham County Jail on a $3,000 bond.
