Items thrown at vehicles; reward offered

DURHAM - A CrimeStoppers reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest or arrests in connection with several recent incidents involving items thrown at vehicles on the Durham Freeway. Two people suffered minor injuries.

The incidents happened between the South Alston Avenue bridge and Briggs Avenue. Some items have been thrown from overpasses or bridges and others from embankments beside the road. They have usually occurred at night and most vehicles have been in the northbound lanes.

The objects are usually rocks or bricks.

Man charged with assault

DURHAM – Calvin Lee Patterson, 55, of North Hyde Park Avenue, was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats, driving while license revoked, failing to register a vehicle and having a fictitious tag. He was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

Man sought on kidnapping charge

Police are trying to locate Richard Lee Smith Jr., who is wanted in connection with a Dec. 24, 2012, kidnapping and armed robbery.

A Durham woman told officers she parked her car in the 800 block of Ninth Street around midday Dec. 24 and noticed a dark green Toyota Camry occupied by a man and woman parked nearby. The victim went into a business and when she returned to her car, she noticed the man standing outside his car looking at a back tire. When she asked him to move so she could get to her car, he pulled a gun and forced her into her car.

He drove the victim to several ATMs in Durham and forced her to withdraw money. The man got out of the victim’s car near Shannon Road and University Drive around 1:20 p.m.

Smith, 24, whose last-known address was Dixon Road, is wanted on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping.

Police seek fraud suspect

DURHAM - Police are trying to locate Carlos Henrique DaCosta, who is wanted on break-in and fraud charges.

DaCosta, 19, of Morreene Road, is charged in connection with a Jan. 15 burglary on Livingston Drive and a December fraud involving stolen checks.

DaCosta is wanted on charges of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, obtaining property by false pretense, forgery and uttering and receiving stolen property.

In other crime:

- Jasmane Bradley of Cheek Road was arrested Wednesday and charged with simple assault and injury to personal property. Bradley was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $1,500 bond.

- Keith Nelson Hall, 22, of Chalk Level Road, was arrested Jan. 18 and charged with larceny of a vehicle, obtaining property by false pretense, possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor probation violation.

- Mario Coello, 17, was arrested Sunday and charged with possession of stolen property. He was released Monday from the Durham County Jail without posting bond.

- Donald Kenneth Navin, 56, was arrested Sunday and charged with assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications. He was released the next day from the Durham County Jail on $1,000 bond.

- Adonis Jesus Stout, 18, of Glendale Avenue, was arrested Monday and charged with larceny and resisting a public officer. Stout was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

- Randy Henry Maples, 17, was arrested Monday and charged with misdemeanor larceny and resisting a public officer. He was released the same day from the Durham County Jail on a $3,000 bond.

- Joseph Lee Hinnant, 21, was arrested Sunday and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture and deliver; maintaining a vehicle for drugs; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released the next day from the Durham County Jail on a $7,500 bond.

- Burglars hit a house Tuesday in the 2300 block of Bedford Street and stole an HP laptop computer, Sony PlayStation 3, 30 video games and three necklaces worth $1,300.

- Copper piping worth $400 was stolen Tuesday from a house in the 100 block of Daneborg Road.

- Thieves took an Apple iPad and keyboard worth $880 from a house in the 1200 block of Dayton Street Monday.

- Copper pipes worth $500 were stolen Tuesday from Southwind Health and Wellness on Sparger Road. Air conditioners sustained damage totaling $2,000.
