Suspicious package judged no threat

CHAPEL HILL – UNC Public Safety investigated a suspicious package near a bus stop on South Street on Monday afternoon, but determined the package did not pose a threat to the campus.

While the investigation took place, traffic and transit buses were detoured and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.

Shortly after 6 p.m., public safety officials had determined the package found near Carrington Hall was not a threat and lifted the warning.

“We were able to determine that this was not a threat,” said UNC Public Safety spokesman Randy Young. “We were able to give the all clear sign.’

Lane of I-85 South in Orange to close Wednesday 

RALEIGH — Weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the left lane of I-85 South at mile marker 167 near N.C. 86 in Orange County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday to perform drainage maintenance.

 NCDOT reminds motorists to expect delays, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

Animal control meeting cancelled

DURHAM -- The Animal Control Advisory Committee’s meeting that had been scheduled for p.m. today has been cancelled. The next scheduled meeting of the committee will be May 28.

‘Steps To School Night’ Thursday

DURHAM.—Durham’s Partnership for Children is teaming with Durham Public Schools to offer a Steps to School Night Thursday as part of the collaborative Transition to Kindergarten (TTK) Initiative. 

The Steps to School Night is designed to equip parents of incoming kindergarten students with knowledge and best practices for transitioning their child into school.  The event will be at the Durham Public Schools Staff Development Center at 2107 Hillandale Road from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

Steps to School Night is an interactive program, designed to teach parents how to deal with the emotional, social and educational needs of their child. Cindy Riley, parent educator at Welcome Baby, will facilitate the program.  Bilingual services will be offered and children are welcome.
