Harris named CHCCS Teacher of the Year
Phillips Middle School teacher Mike Harris has been named 2013 District Teacher of the Year for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
Harris, a social studies teacher, has 14 years of teaching experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biomechanics from the University of California at Davis and a teaching certificate from Chapman University in Orange, Calif.
For his accomplishment, Harris received a $1,000 check from Harrington Bank as well as gifts from local businesses.
His class was showcased in The Herald-Sun in January, when students got the opportunity to interview National Geographic researcher Spencer Wells via the online communication software called Skype.
During that class, kids got to ask questions about genetics, anthropology and human migration.
At the time, Harris said that the idea was to give students a means of appreciating the person behind the content that they were learning.
“It is so easy for them to get lost in the misconception that content is this abstract thing that haunts them through their school day,” he said. “They often miss the joy, or essence of simply learning for the sake of learning.
“I hope they can find an appreciation for the hard work and dedication to learning that it takes to accomplish a task.”
