For the first time in six years, North Carolina’s women’s basketball team is one win from the Final Four.

Freshman Diamond DeShields scored 19 points and the fourth-seeded Tar Heels ousted top-seeded South Carolina 65-58 in the NCAA Tournament Stanford Regional semifinals at Maples Pavilion.

UNC (27-9) will play No. 2 seed Stanford Tuesday (9 p.m., ESPN) for a berth in this weekend’s Final Four in Nashville, Tenn.

Stephanie Mavunga added 13 points and nine rebounds for UNC, which beat South Carolina (29-5) for the second time this season. The Tar Heels never trailed and led by as many as 12 points in the first half.

UNC will play in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008.

A win Tuesday night over Stanford could allow Sylvia Hatchell to coach the Tar Heels this season after all. Hatchell, a Hall of Fame coach, has been absent from the UNC bench as she’s received treatments to battle leukemia. Her doctors have told her there’s a good chance she could travel to Nashville to be with the Tar Heels should they reach the Final Four.
