Woman found dead on Durham trail
Early Wednesday, a passer-by found a woman dead on the Rocky Creek Trail not far from Shepard Middle School in south Durham.
She was found about 6:15 a.m. on the trail, which is part of the Pearsontown/Rocky Creek Greenway and stretches between Elmira Park and N.C. Highway 55. The paved, 10-foot wide trail follows Rocky Creek for about three quarters of a mile.
It’s unclear how the woman died or whether she was killed on the trail or taken there after she was murdered elsewhere.
“Investigators are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the death,” said Kammie Michael, spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department.
The victim had not been identified late Wednesday. No suspects or arrests were reported.
Chip Sudderth, a spokesman for Durham Public Schools, said the investigation had no effect on operations at Shepard Middle, “but we sent an automated phone call to parents explaining that the police activity in the area was unrelated to the school.”
