UNC women take season’s first rivalry win
In the first North Carolina-Duke basketball game of the season, the Tar Heels delivered the first blow.
Freshman Diamond DeShields scored a career-high 30 points and freshman Allisha Gray added 24 as the Tar Heels beat the Blue Devils 89-78 Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
No. 17 UNC (18-6, 6-4 ACC) broke a three-game losing streak and handed No. 3 Duke back-to-back home losses for the first time since 1994.
The Tar Heels never trailed and broke a seven-game losing streak against their rival. It was also their first win in Cameron in six years.
Elizabeth Williams scored a career-high 28 points and Tricia Liston had 20 for Duke (22-3, 9-2).
The men's teams will have their first meeting of the season Wednesday night when UNC hosts Duke at the Smith Center (9 p.m., WRAL/ESPN).
