Durham County sheriff’s investigators are asking for information about a suspicious fire that destroyed an abandoned mobile home and damaged nearby buildings last week. No one was hurt.

Redwood Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to 3417 Cheek Road at 8:48 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor called 911 to report that a vacant mobile home was on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames and then asked for a sheriff’s arson investigator to respond to the scene because some aspects of the blaze appeared suspicious.

“Several men with flashlights were seen near the trailer only minutes before the fire started,” Detective Jon Helsius, the lead investigator on the case, said. “While I’m not prepared to call it an arson, the fire is definitely suspicious, and I would like to speak with anyone who might have information about the identities of the men seen at the location or how the fire started.”

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Helsius at 919-560-0880 or Durham CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash for information leading to the arrest of individuals for felony crimes, and callers never have to identify themselves.
