Two teens, 12-year-old girl charged in carjacking slaying

A 16-year-old boy and two girls, ages 14 and 12, have been charged with murder in a carjacking committed on Friday night in northern Durham that led to a shooting death, police reported.

The victim, Johnny Danilo Villatoro, 35, of South Woodcrest Street, was shot to death during an apparent carjacking shortly before 7 p.m., according to investigators. One of the suspects, a 12-year-old girl from Raleigh, accidentally shot herself in the abdomen and leg while inside the victim’s vehicle, according to investigators. Officers found the girl around 7:30 p.m. on Channing Court. They also located Villatoro’s stolen SUV behind an apartment building on Channing Court, Durham police reported.

The 12-year-old girl was treated at a local hospital was to face murder charges. She was released from the hospital on Saturday and was placed in Durham County juvenile facility, police stated.

Two other teens, Justino Navarette Maya, 16, of 311 South LaSalle Street, and a 14-year-old girl from Raleigh, have also been charged with murder. Maya was arrested Friday night and placed in Durham County Jail without bond. The 14-year-old girl was arrested Saturday morning and has been placed in a Wake County juvenile facility.

According to investigators, the teens first encountered Villatoro on Avondale Drive Friday evening and asked him for a ride. He drove them to Firth Street where the carjacking and shooting occurred. Villatoro apparently did not know the teens.
