Teen killed in 2-car accident
A Durham teen died Friday after colliding with another motorist on N.C. Hwy 55.
Tyreic Elyja Hemphill, 16, was driving north in a 1997 Honda Civic at about 4:30 p.m. when police say he crossed the center median into the path of Patrick Bailey's southbound 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88.
Bailey hit his brakes, investigators said, but could not avoid the collision. Both cars went down an embankment.
Durham firefighters worked for several minutes to extricate Hemphill from the wrecked Honda. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Bailey was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that did not seem life-threatening.
The accident remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the accident.
