Serial Durham robber charged with additional crimes

Brandon Russell, 41, of Beaver Dam Run in Durham, was charged Friday with additional robberies after being arrested Thursday morning for allegedly robbing a woman downtown.

In each new robbery case, the suspect implied he had a weapon and took cash from the register, according to Durham police. Investigators connected Russell to the following additional robberies: Dec. 22 at Cruizers on Hillsborough Road; Dec. 23 at Kroger on North Pointe Drive; Dec. 23 at Rite Aid on Broad Street and Jan. 1 at Sears at Northgate Mall.

Russell was charged Friday with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, breaking or entering a motor vehicle, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods/property, communicating threats, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping.

Russell remained in Durham County Jail Saturday under $5.5 million bond.

In other news:

-         Donnie Pearce, 41, of Ninth Street in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with possession with intent to sell or distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a house used for keeping and selling a controlled substance, and manufacturing, selling or distributing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of N.C. School of Science and Mathematics. He was in Durham County Jail Saturday under $30,000 bond.

-         Brian Anthony Simmons, 21, of Higher Learning Drive in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with obtaining property under false pretense and felony possession of stolen goods/property. He was released the same day from Durham County Jail after posting $5,000 bond.

-         Daniel Wayne Biggs, 26, of Swisswood Drive in Raleigh was arrested Friday and charged with felony possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was in Durham County Jail under $2,500 bond.

-         Leon Travis Frances Hayward, 23, of Spring Creek Drive in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with breaking or entering a motor vehicle, larceny of a firearm and larceny. He was in Durham County Jail under $50,000 bond.

-         Kenneth Desmar Pittman, 44, of Evergreen Street in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was in Durham County Jail under $25,000 bond.

-         Rodney Dozier, 48, of Eva Street in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with reckless driving to endanger, hit and run by leaving the scene of property damage and possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute oxycodone. He was released from Durham County Jail after posting $5,000 bond.

-         Maurice Vinshawn Cates Jr., 24, of Raynor Street in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was released from Durham County Jail after posting $50,000 bond.

-         Thomas Anthony Parker, 49, of West South Avenue in Wake Forest was arrested Friday and charged with obtaining property under false pretense and larceny. He was released from Durham County Jail after posting $1,500 bond.

-         Kenyetta Norwood, 29, of Guess Road in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with breaking and entering, larceny, obtaining property under false pretense and injury to real property. He was released from Durham County Jail after posting $10,000 bond.
