Two dead at home on Cheek Road
In a frantic 911 call just before 7 a.m. Monday morning, a female caller told an operator that she saw a man she knew lying on the ground outside the house at 2201 Cheek Road.
“Please, hurry up,” the caller said. “Please, hurry up.”
The operator assured her that police and paramedics were on the way to the house near Merrick-Moore Elementary School and asked if the caller was outside with the man.
“I’m scared to go outside,” she said, in a recording released by the city/county emergency services department.
When Durham police arrived, they found a woman - identified Tuesday as Jessica Liriano -- dead inside the house and the wounded man, said police spokeswoman Kammie Michael. Police Tuesday identified the man as Jerron McGirt, 34. Both lived at 2201 Cheek Road.
The caller went outside only after police were on the scene.
The McGirt was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators had not yet determined a motive late Monday and identities of the victims had not been released, pending notification of next of kin. No charges had been filed. Michael confirmed that a child was inside the house when the shootings occurred, but she said that the child was uninjured.
Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator S. Pate at 919-560-4440, ext. 29332 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
The fatal shootings on Cheek Road actually were the second reported incident of gun violence in Durham on Monday morning.
About 4 a.m., police say, a 38-year-old woman was seriously injured and a 46-year-old man was grazed by a bullet in a home on Dowd Street. The injuries did not appear life-threatening to either victim in that case. No charges had been filed late Monday.
“There does not appear to be a connection between the two incidents at this time,” Michael said.
