UNC women sweep regular-season rivalry
No. 14 North Carolina swept the regular season series from No. 7 Duke for the first time in six years, defeating its rival 64-60 Sunday at Carmichael Arena.
Diamond DeShields scored 18 points – making her the first freshman in UNC history to score 500 points in a season – and fellow freshman Allisha Gray scored all 12 of her points in the second half as the Tar Heels won 64-60 in the teams' regular-season finale.
UNC (22-8, 10-6 ACC) ran off a 20-0 run spanning halftime to lead by 19 points, then watched Duke (25-5, 12-4) respond with a 16-0 burst and fight back to within a point before holding on down the stretch.
The Tar Heels won the previous meeting 89-78 on Feb. 10 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Both teams now prepare for the ACC Tournament, which starts Wednesday in Greensboro. UNC will be the No. 6 seed and will start Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Duke, which will be the No. 2 seed and has a bye into the quarterfinals, will begin Friday at 6 p.m.
