Deputies in serious condition after crash
The three Durham County Sheriff’s deputies involved in a crash Thursday are in serious condition, according to law enforcement officials.
A preliminary investigation from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol shows that a Derrick Smith, 56, of Summit Street in Durham was traveling west on North Carolina Highway 98 when he crossed the center line. As he crossed the center line into the eastbound lane of N.C. 98 he struck an unmarked Durham County Sheriff’s van head-on. Deputy Hayden Gould was driving the van and attempted to avoid the crash, but at the same time Smith attempted to return to the westbound lane and struck the van.
Two other deputies in the van, Bradley Graberek and Casey Norwood were injured in the crash. All three were transported to Duke Hospital with serious injuries. Smith was transported to Duke Hospital with minor injuries.
Charges for the crash are pending, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
