After a year away from Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the ACC baseball championship is returning to the Bull City.
“We’re very much looking forward to the return of the ACC Championship to the DBAP,” said Durham Bulls general manager Mike Birling. “We love hosting some of the best college players, coaches and teams in the country in the Triangle, and we’re excited to have them back in 2018 and 2019.”
Last season’s tournament was moved to Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Kentucky as the ACC, following the NCAA’s lead, removed its championship events from North Carolina because of the controversy surrounding House Bill 2. The law, which was repealed in April but too late for the tournament to remain in Durham, required people to use public restrooms for the gender that is stated on their birth certificate.
The ACC and the Durham Bulls announced this week that tickets now are on sale for the tournament May 22-27.
Never miss a local story.
Ticket books for the full tournament are available for $150, which includes tickets to all 15 tournament games, including the championship contest on the final day. A weekend package for $45, which includes both semifinals on Saturday and Sunday’s championship, is another option.
The 2018 championship format features 12 teams in a pool play format leading into a four-team, single-elimination bracket to determine the league champion.
The 12 teams in the championship will be grouped into four pools of three teams apiece. Pool play will take place during the first four days of the tournament with three games each day. Each pool will play a round robin, with the top team advancing to the semifinals. The semifinals will take place on Saturday, followed by the championship on Sunday.
Durham has hosted 10 ACC baseball tournaments, including in five in the past nine years. Tournament attendance records for a single game (11,329 in 2013) and a title game (9,759 in 2015) were both set in Durham.
