Federal authorities said a driver charged with hitting several people early Sunday is in the country illegally, according to multiple media reports.
Durham police arrested Hugo Romero-Robles, 23, following a hit-and-run crash involving seven pedestrians who were waiting in line at a food truck outside the nightclub La Luna in the 3000 block of Auto Drive.
Romero-Robles, who is being held in the Durham County jail, was charged with driving while impaired and felony hit and run. He also was put under a detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to the ice.gov website, “ICE places detainers on aliens who have been arrested on local criminal charges and for whom ICE possesses probable cause to believe that they are removable from the United States, so that ICE can take custody of the alien when he or she is released from local custody.”

In the incident for which Romero-Robles is charged, two people were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries while the other five sustained injuries that were said not to be life threatening.
Romero-Robles had previously pleaded guilty to DWI and served two years on probation for that offense, according to court records.
No information about Romero-Robles’ country of origin was provided by ICE or the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, which runs the Durham County jail.
