Duke and Durham emergency responders arrived at the Duke French Family Science Center shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a small explosion, according to the university.

A small fire that ignited inside a mini-refrigerator in a second-floor lab activated the fire alarm and sprinkler system. Duke University Police and the Durham County Fire Department arrived at the scene, temporarily shut down the building, and no injuries were reported.

Damage to the fire was limited to inside the mini-fridge, according to the university release. Water restoration crews began working at about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday to begin the drying process. By 8 a.m., most of the drying had been completed.

The building is now open for normal operations. Certain labs and rooms may need to be closed for additional work in the coming days, according to Duke.
