‘Pork, Pickles and Peanuts’ coming in July
Duke Homestead celebrates one of North Carolina's greatest traditions – food -- on July 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at "Pork, Pickles and Peanuts: Tastes of North Carolina."
The free family event will focus on everything that makes our state taste great with the annual Barbecue Cook-Off followed by the Pie Competition.
Visitors can get a taste of the action themselves and help judge and vote in a new People's Choice category. Local peanut and pickle vendors will be on hand, and local arts and crafts vendors will be selling their wares.
Special musical guests will be the Malpass Brothers on the main stage, performing cover hits from the likes of Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.
There will be demonstrations of traditional pickling methods, a peanut boil and the "Everything but the Oink" historic food program where costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional recipes for pork.
Kids can try 19th Century games and toys and everyone can enjoy traditional banjo and fiddle music in the swept yard.
